How We Use Your Electricity Usage Data
IntelliWatt™ is built to save you money – not guess about your bill. Every home is different, every usage pattern is different, and every electricity plan charges differently. To recommend the right plan for your home, we need the same thing every energy provider, broker, and advisor needs: your real electricity usage.
Your usage data helps our system understand things like:
- How much power you use during the day versus at night
- Seasonal patterns and shoulder-month swings
- How much of your bill is driven by HVAC load
- How you use power during peak vs. off-peak hours
- Whether “free nights,” “free weekends,” “solar days,” or other plan types might save you money
The more accurate your data, the more accurate your savings. Our system compares your usage against plans available through our growing provider network (starting with WattBuy) to estimate what each plan would have cost you based on your actual usage. Then we highlight the lowest-priced options for your specific pattern.
Without usage data, IntelliWatt™ can’t run the full analysis engine. That means fewer insights, less personalized recommendations, and a higher risk of missing savings opportunities. Sharing your usage allows us to do real math on your situation instead of relying on guesses or generic averages.
You can provide your usage in two main ways:
- Smart Meter Texas (where available): Connect your SMT account so we can securely read your interval data.
- Manual upload: Upload a bill, CSV, or Green Button file with your usage history.
To keep your results and any entries that depend on usage active, we need reasonably current data. That’s why certain features and entries work best when your usage information covers at least the most recent 12 months.
Data Sharing and Privacy
We take your privacy seriously. Here is how we handle your electricity usage data in connection with HitTheJackWatt™ and IntelliWatt™:
- No sale of personal data: We do not sell or rent your personal information or individual usage data to third-party marketers.
- Service use only: We use your usage data to analyze your electricity bill, compare plans available through our provider network, estimate potential savings, and operate and improve the IntelliWatt™ service.
- Aggregated, de-identified analysis: We may combine your usage data with data from other users in an aggregated and de-identified form (for example, to study usage patterns by region or plan type, or to improve our recommendation models). When we do this, we remove personal identifiers so the aggregated data cannot reasonably be linked back to you.
- Limited sharing with partners: When needed to deliver the service (for example, to compare plans or facilitate a plan switch), we may share limited information with trusted partners such as WattBuy or Retail Electric Providers, subject to appropriate contractual and privacy protections.
- Your control: If you disconnect Smart Meter Texas access or stop uploading usage, we will no longer receive updated usage data from you. You may also contact us if you have questions about how your data is handled or if you wish to request deletion, subject to any legal obligations we may have to retain certain records.
IntelliWatt™ collects the following types of information from users:
- Personal Information: such as name, email address, phone number, and zip code when you sign up or complete forms.
- Energy Usage Data: when you authorize us to access your Smart Meter Texas account, connect other services or devices via API, or provide usage details manually (including interval data, billing history, and plan details, where available).
- Home Characteristics: details that affect energy use, such as square footage, year built, insulation quality, window type, number of stories, foundation type, thermostat settings, and HVAC or water-heating system types.
- Appliance & Device Characteristics: information about appliances and other energy-related equipment in your home (for example HVAC units, water heaters, pool pumps, refrigerators/freezers, EV chargers, smart thermostats, and other devices you choose to enter), including data points like quantity, age, efficiency level, and usage patterns.
- Referral and Entry Activity: including number of referrals, entries earned, HitTheJackWatt participation, and other portal engagement activity related to promotions and rewards.
